Year in Review

As promised here's my 2012 year in review. I'm telling myself that it's late because I want to be a little different and not give my year in review in the first week of the new year, like everyone else. Yea, that sounds good!

January - Started running again with the dog. Also began the Instructor Training Course here at school to become a group fitness instructor.
February - Took my AFAA Group Fitness certification (later found out I passed.) Also presented at my first professional conference!
March - Successfully auditioned and became a group fitness cycling instructor!
April - Went to a bunch of graduation parties, recitals, and concerts!
May - Got married :), taught my first cycling class, went on a honeymoon. (WOW! Busy month)
June - Helped some good friends move, for the second time in six weeks. This time to their very own home!
July - Started Insanity (Didn't get very far), Went to another conference. Had a second wedding celebration at home!
August - Started my last semester of coursework toward my PhD
September - Went to my first SEC football game. Go Gators!
October - Celebrated my nephew's 1st birthday. Passed my written qualifying exams.
November - Celebrated my niece's birth and my birthday. Was named group fitness instructor of the month!
December - Went to my first Midwest Band Clinic. Went to my first BCS Bowl game (we left on 12/31).

Hey all! Just a quick check in. I'm still here, working out, teaching cycle, being a grad student. The later has taken up most of my time. Tuesday and Wednesday are my written qualifying exams. For those unfamiliar with this painful process, it's basically a two day written test to show that you know everything about your given field in a PhD program. Yea, that crazy. Blogging has taken a major back seat to this process. Wish me luck!

Injury Report

I haven't posted in a while, but it's not due to an injury as the title suggests. The start of school has been VERY busy. I've been keeping up working out, teaching, and making new playlists, oh and that school stuff. Writing blog entries has taken a major backseat.

Back to the injury...

I had a participant in my cycle class nearly pass out! It was right at the end, just before the final song. The 'injured' got off the bike, so I thought they had to leave early, but then I noticed they sat down on the stage and hunched over. I quickly jumped off the bike and told another participant to get some help from the front desk.

Now I was playing double duty, make sure the 'injured' is ok and bring the class to a reasonable end. Since it was the last song, and a quick one, I was able to direct two sprints and a little gear increase. That was in between trying to keep the 'injured' talking hoping to keep them conscious.

The first staff member came in and looked at me and asked if he should call an ambulance. Since she was near unconsciousness I said yes, he called right away. By this point several other staff members, including one of the big upity ups, were in the room taking care of the 'injured.' Now I was able to bring my class to a quick close. Before my class was done with their stretches police and fire rescue were there taking care of the 'injured.' Awesome response time! All of us are first aid/cpr/aed trained, but until you're in a real situation it's all just training. I hope the 'injured' comes back to a class and isn't scared off by this.

Lesson, pay attention to your body. This participant knew enough that they weren't ok and got themselves safely off the bike and onto the ground. Sure keeping yourself from even getting to this point would be great, but sometimes our bodies don't behave. If it hurts stop, if you're short of breath stop, if you're starting to pass out stop. Stay safe everyone!

A New Start

The fall semester has started and I've already taught my first week of classes. There were only a couple returners from the summer. Different schedule, so who knows how many will be able to make it? The classes went well. I went back to my original playlists from the first part of the summer, but removed a few songs and reworked the workouts. With only three cycle classes and one core class a week I'll be able to keep on top of playlists/workouts a lot easier. Well, in between dissertation writing. It's off to edit the playlist for tomorrow night!

Guilty Pleasure Playlist

Note: This was scheduled to auto-post on 8/8, but didn't. Oops!

The day has arrived!!! At the time of this posting I'll be starting the warmup with the Guilty Pleasure Playlist for my Cycle 45 class! I've had some great suggestions from participants and Facebook friends. A few are just utterly embarrassing hilarious peculiar. I will admit the Miley Cyrus song was addition to the Guilty Pleasure Playlist. Although the suggestion from a HS friend of the LMFAO song may overtake the top spot as my guilty pleasure song. I've got a GREAT workout planned to this playlist. So aside from some good laughs, it should be an awesome cycle class!
